Neither a museum, nor a gallery, nor an exhibition center, the Winzavod calls itself merely an «arts territory». The territory is situated on old workshops, a wine-tasting laboratory and basements that once belonged to the Moskovskaia Bavaria brewery (and later Moscow’s oldest winery). Today at the territory of The Winzavod there are three major exhibition spaces. The area of the largest is 2500 square meters; the other two, located one on top of the other, are 770 square meters each. The Winery also includes the eminent Moscow galleries: XL, Aidan, M & Y Guelman Gallery, Regina, Proun, Atelier No. 2, the photo galleries Victory, Photographer.ru, and FotoLoft, and exhibition halls of the RIGroup (a branch of the Moscow House of Photography). There is also the Cara & Co. conceptual store, which is located on the border between business and art, as well as advertising agencies, a communications group, and a beauty and health center. Moscow Biennales of contemporary art, as well as lectures by Norman Foster and Robert Wilson, Fashion and Style in Photography 2009 took place on the grounds of The Winery. The territory can be accessed from the Garden Ring Road and from the Yauza river embankment. There is parking for over 100 cars. The Winery is also of interest as a rare example in today Moscow of pre-revolutionary industrial architecture. Make sure to visit the «Grand Wine Reservoir», a 2500 square meter space made famous by artist and curator Oleg Kulik’s project «I Believe».
XL, one of Moscow’s oldest galleries, first appeared at the beginning of the 90s. Curator and gallery director Yelena Selina introduced Moscow to a number of important names in contemporary Russian art: the Dubosarskii-Vinogradov duet, Konstantin Zvezdochetov, Oleg Kulik, and Igor Mukhin. As always, Selina is on the lookout for young talent and every year introduces new artists to the public: sculptor Sergei Shekhovtsev, master of large-scale installations Irina Korina, and the video artists «PG.»
Yoko is a Japanese restaurant located right across the entrance to the Cathedral of Christ the Savior. The specialty of the restaurant is fish and the menu features blue fin tuna, Japanese «hirami» halibut, sea urchins and scallops in shells, all flown in twice a week right from Tokyo’s famous Tskiji fish market.
Zhan-Zhak is a Parisian bistro in the heart of Moscow. The menu is written in chalk on a board. Wine decorates the window ledges and radiators. Tables covered in paper on which you can draw. And on the weekends, an accordion player winds through the café tables.
The restaurant’s name reflects its luxurious interior of gold moulding and mosaic. To match the gold is a sophisticated and aristocratic fusion menu and an excellent view of the White House, the river bank, and the hotel Ukraine.
